As for WWE, a lot of people might not have understood why WWE was "kissing New York's butt," but for WWE, MSG is home. More recently, MSG is Randy Savage, Bret Hart, Curt Hennig, Shawn Michaels, Steve Austin, The Rock, Triple H, John Cena, Eddie Guerrero, Kurt Angle. Chris Benoit, the way I'd l...
STAMFORD, Conn., November 16, 2009 – World Wrestling Entertainment® announced today that former Navy Seal and Governor of Minnesota Jesse Ventura will host WWE: A Raw Thanksgiving live November 23 at 8:00 PM ET / 7:00 PM CT on USA Network from the Giant Center in Hershey, PA. Ventura is the s...
• They have really been making some strides with Drew McIntyre of late. Nice, realistic fight he had with Finlay on SmackDown, leaving both guys — but most importantly, McIntyre — looking legit and strong. Finlay is a great opponent for McIntyre to learn from and grow as a wrestler. Nice work. L...
• The reunion of the Hart Foundation — Bret Hart and Jim Neidhart — in the ring for an interview. • Ken Anderson vs. Romeo Roselli • Christy Hemme in action • NEW Championship: Jason Blade vs. Paul London A meet-and-great with The Hart Foundation and Ken Anderson from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
If you are looking for my interviews with Ken Anderson and Dusty Rhodes, as linked from the great guys at Figure Four Online/Wrestling Observer, they are here and here. The air was sucked right out of the arena, who whether it was the lowly ECW title or not, was dying for a career moment for Wil...
• Team Morrison (John Morrison, Shelton Benjamin, Matt Hardy, Evan Bourne & Finlay) vs. Team Miz (The Miz, Jack Swagger, Sheamus, Drew McIntyre & Dolph Ziggler0 • Team Mickie (Mickie James, Eve Torres, Kelly Kelly, Gail Kim & Melina) vs. Team McCool (Michelle McCool, Layla,...
Watching SmackDown on DVR on Sunday morning with a buddy, I remarked that Chris Jericho vs. The Undertaker was a seldom-used match and that it was actually fresh for a change. Despite the pair's long tenure in WWE, I can't really remember them ever having a singles match, much less a feud.
Ken Anderson was a world champion waiting to happen. It certainly seemed that way. Then, somewhere along the line, things changed and he ended up on the outside looking in at World Wrestling Entertainment. PS: As Mr. Anderson too, right?
These days, Dusty is running the creative team at Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW), a WWE developmental territory and is enjoying watching both of his sons, Dustin (a.k.a. Goldust) in ECW and Cody on Raw. Phil Strum: First off, how's everything going with you. You're working in FCW (Flor...
WWE Hall-of-Famer "The American Dream" Dusty Rhodes and the former Mr. Kennedy, Ken Anderson are part of a big weekend of wrestling in the Hudson Valley. NEW also has shows coming up the following weekend in Waterbury, Conn. and Washingtonville. For information on these shows, as well as tic...
• Paul Burchill challenged Hurricane to a match next week where Hurricane's mask is up, as is the Burchills' tenure in ECW. I like the work Burchill has been doing lately, so hopefully for his sake, someone noticed and he ends up on Raw or SmackDown.
WWE, though, at times, can repeat ITself, is often cliched and officially, has no idea what its audience, "the WWE universe," actually wants. Did I forget anything else? Oh yeah, the inside jokes about getting screamed at in your headset. That was probably a shot at Mick Foley and Taz.
I did watch SmackDown though. The rest of SmackDown... Jericho should make the match, which includes Big Show and The Undertaker, better. Jericho should be higher up the card than he is since he is probably one of the best acts WWE has. • CM Punk beat up ex-wrestler and ref Scott Armstrong. OK.
Spending a lot of money for Hogan in order to present a convoluted show where Mick Foley turns heel because of a destroyed picture (or where a guy wins the top belt simply because one of his opponents just doesn't seem to care) makes absolutely no business sense, at all.
I am not confident in WWE to be consistent with this push at all. Tonight ECW will have a title match between Christian and Yoshi Tatsu and will have a new color commentator in Byron Saxton, who replaces Matt Striker. Striker will be filling in for Jim Ross starting this week on SmackDown.
You would think this would spell the beginning of the end of Vince Russo and Ed Ferrara in TNA, but stranger things have happened. Hogan seemed to indicate that he would be willing to work with Russo if Russo knew his place. Having Eric Bischoff and Jason Hervey in the TNA equation adds even mor...
The 7-on-7 tag team match was pretty exciting for what it was: A spot-driven, fast match with 14 guys in it. SmackDown won, which surprised the heck out of me. I guess it makes sense since they had Big Show turn on his teammates that we could have Jerishow vs. DX at Survivor Series. But if Triple H is...
The rest of Raw... • It was fun to have Snoop stick up for Marty Jannetty getting dissed on SmackDown. Jannetty worked a pretty decent 3-minute match with Miz and even did his flip-bump on a clothesline. That was cool. I hope Marty is doing well.
On a personal note, a friend and I had the opportunity to meet Shane in December 2003 at Chris Jericho's Fozzy concert at Tribeca Rock Club in New York and he was a very nice guy. We tried to call him Mr. McMahon, but of course, he said, "That's my father's name. Call me Shane." We had a very nice talk w...
All in all, a run-of-the-mill show. I guess they are pouring a lot of their resources into the SmackDown 10th anniversary show. The main event of that is Randy Orton, Ted DiBiase, Cody Rhodes and CM Punk against The Undertaker, John Cena and D-Generation X in Boston.
So during the match, Lawler says, "If never seen a tag team Hell in a Cell. As a matter of fact, I think it's the first time we've ever had one." (It's the third, and the guy in his headset — Vince McMahon has been in one, as have two of the wrestlers in the ring.)
Yes folks, TNA (which I did not weigh in on yet from last week) released one of the few creative minds left on the roster, Jim Cornette, as well as one of their few remaining road agents, BG James a.k.a. Road Dogg. Cornette had also been a road agent as tapings, as James has also been on the road. That l...
My fellow Long Islander, Zack Ryder, is the No. 1 contender to the ECW title. Ryder won a 10-man battle royal on ECW, outlasting Tommy Dreamer, Vladimir Kozlov, Goldust, Sheamus, Shelton Benjamin, Ezekiel Jackson, Yoshi Tatsu, Tyler Reks and Paul Burchill to win.
• Evan Bourne and Hornswoggle defeated Chavo Guerrero and Carlito when the little guy pinned Guerrero. I guess that's better than Hornswoggle facing Chavo one on one. For what it was, the match wasn't even that bad. After the match, Chavo conceded defeat to Hornswoggle. Somewhere, a twinkle...
The Undertaker had CM Punk tap out to the "Hell's Gate" gogoplata, before SmackDown general manager Theodore Long informed 'Taker that Vickie Guerrero had banned the hold and that the match must continue. Punk locked in the Anaconda Vice after the match restarted and referee Scott Armst...
• Fun little brawl with Finlay and Mike Knox in the Belfast Brawl. They gave Knox most of the match and the finish was Knox doing his cool flying bodypress right into a shillelagh shot from Finlay. Knox landed on Finlay, which was yet another nice wrinkle.
There's no question that TNA Wrestling is a company in a lot of flux right now. From the Kurt Angle legal woes to the questionable status within the organization of Jeff Jarrett to power-players and originals like Dutch Mantel and Don West getting reassigned on a regular basis, TNA seems to...
• Chavo Guerrero from SmackDown to RAW. I guess he gets to push the wheelchair. • John Morrison from ECW to SmackDown. Good move for Morrison. • Carlito from SmackDown to RAW. Reforming the Colons. • Brie Bella from SmackDown to RAW. Reforming the Bella Twins.
RAW ECW • The new GM of SmackDown is Teddy Long and the new interim GM of ECW is Tiffany. It's only ECW, so I won't complain terribly much, but I haven't seen much from Tiffany to warrant her becoming a brand GM. I guess it's better than nothing.
The insane head-first bump that Undertaker nearly took was nasty. The emotion both men showed within the context of the match was something you simply don't see much in pro wrestling in the year 2009. Well, I still gotta catch up on RAW and ECW with you folks...I plan on doing that soon.
Also, having Michaels vs. Undertaker as the main attraction of WrestleMania (and really to a lot of people, the ONLY attraction), reinforced to me that WWE is in dire need of developing new stars. Shawn and Taker are only going to last so much longer.
• The Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels segment was very well done. They did a good job of painting this as Michaels really frustrating The Undertaker and portraying Shawn as the first guy who is not intimidated by the Dead Man. Having Shawn outfox the Deadman's wacky magic was also a nice touch.
Jimmy Hart: You know what? Trying to keep the dream alive, you know? Everything's been going good. Just doing the WWE stuff. They call me to go out and do the personal appearances and do all the Legends stuff for them. Just finished three or four months ago, Hulk Hogan's Celebrity Championship...
Obviously, the biggest news is that Christian is back in WWE, as part of the ECW roster, and challenged the winner of the Jack Swagger-Finlay ECW Championship match at No Way Out. While this was not exactly an ideal scenario for Christian's fans, or I guess his peeps, as he likes to call them,...
SMACKDOWN Now Undertaker will face Triple H next week on SmackDown. Will he lose? When Edge comes back to SmackDown, where will he be? My guess is losing to Triple H. • Why would you hire Khali to take out Undertaker if he had misgivings over doing so?
Rinse and repeat for Tuesday. I just finished watching ECW a little while ago. RAW ECW • Fairly dominant win for Henry over Finlay. This has turned into quite the long feud for Henry and Hardy, but I aassume the last chapter should be at No Mercy.
• I had a lot of fun watching the SmackDown scramble. I was a little surprised that Shelton Benjamin and MVP did not register falls in the match. It was surreal to look at the screen and see "The Brian Kendrick, Current WWE champion." It was a heck of a finish to have Jeff Hardy come so close to winni...
• Striker did a great job putting over Dreamer's worth as a wrestler and character, but his match with Chavo Guerrero was just OK. Was not that surprised to see Chavo get the duke in this one. • Finlay vs. Mike Knox was hard-hitting and had a good backstory. I think there is more potential in the Kno...
• Hell in a Cell: Edge vs. The Undertaker. Easily should be the match of the night. These two have amazing chemistry together and the concept match they are doing is conducive to putting on a show-stopping performance. Phil's pick: The Undertaker.
The top secondary guys right now are Chris Jericho (face), Shawn Michaels (face) and Mr. Kennedy (face). That doesn't even cover ECW, where their title feud is Kane (face) vs. Big Show (face) or SmackDown!, where I can't even think of who other than Batista (who is taking time off soon) would c...
