Opinion: Huerta Has More Issues With UFC. external link

While most people would have believed that coming into UFC 87 talk about Roger Huerta would revolve around his upcoming fight with Kenny Florian, but his recent comments in Fight! magazine have taken the spotlight. Having voiced his dis-satisfaction with how the UFC has treated him, and making statements that said he didn’t care if he fought for UFC or someone else one would think that Huerta has an axe to grind. Adding to the situation is an analysis by MMA insider Dave Meltzer, via WrestlingObserver. Here’s what was said:

“Huerta, who has one fight left on his contact after the Florian fight, is far apart with UFC on terms for a renewal. Huerta, who has gotten a new agent, was asking for six-figures guaranteed per fight as well as points on the PPV, in negotiations that haven’t gone well for some time. That’s a better deal then [BJ] Penn, so he wasn’t going to get it. The UFC position is that they groomed Huerta and pushed him hard and were careful of his opponents, with the exception of Clay Guida….”

There’s no way that the UFC will ever allow Huerta to fight for the title(if he beats KenFlo) unless he’s got a contract in place, and it certainly sounds like Huerta’s gonna leave and go to the greener pastures of another promotion(Affliction springs to mind.) It’s also very likely that if Huerta loses his upcoming fight to Kenny Florian he’ll be leaving the UFC anyways, but his ability and record will be tarnished enough for the UFC to market him away as not the best lightweight in the world, and not the #1 contender neither. In any case The MMA News will bring you all the latest on Roger Huerta and as always The MMA News will issue live results for UFC 87.

Roger Huerta created some waves recently talking about his dissatisfaction with how the UFC has treated him, saying he doesn’t necessarily care if he keeps fighting for them or if it’s for someone else. What’s your take on that? How do you feel about the way the UFC treats its fighters?

You know what, the UFC has always taken real good care of me and I’m very happy to be where I am. I was fighting in worse conditions than Roger probably was or is when I first came into the UFC with my original “Ultimate Fighter” contract, but it’s like any job. You have to go in there and prove yourself. You don’t start off as CEO. You have to work your way up.

The UFC is in a position now where they can pay their fighters better and I think that’s only going to improve and I’ve always been happy with the way they’ve treated me. This is where I started and I’d love to finish here. Every fighter’s experience is different, though. People will be in your ear and tell you things about who’s getting paid what, and of course everyone always wants to get paid more. But I can’t speak for Roger. Obviously he’s disappointed, so I guess we’ll see what happens.
