Jorge Gurgel Released From UFC, Signed By Strikeforce.
High level Jiu-jitsu practitioner and now former UFC fighter Jorge Gurgel has been released from the UFC, even after receiving his second Fight Of the Night award in a loss at UFC 91, and has been immediately resigned by California based Strikeforce. Gurgel expressed some sadness at leaving the UFC but has also said that he is looking forward to the challenges offered by Strikeforce, who seem to be one of the few promotions besides the UFC that has survived and thrived with the recent MMA explosion. Fighters.com did a great interview recently with “Snowman” Jeff Monson, and one of the questions he asked was about the upcoming main event fight for UFC 91:Couture vs. Lesnar. Joe was coming off a disappointing loss by second-round TKO to fellow Bay State fighter Kenny Florian last April 2 in the main event on UFC Fight Night 13 in Denver. “I went from being in the main event and losing,” Lauzon noted, “to fighting off-TV on the undercard. My name alone wasn’t enough to get my fight on TV. While fans of Patrick Cote have been talking tough about his chances of taking the UFC middleweight title from Anderson Silva, the folks that take care of betting seem to have a different view. The line is: Anderson Silva -1150 Patrick Cote +650 as of time of writing, the line is subject to change. There have been other lines that are pretty bad, but that may be one of the most lop-sided lines in MMA history. The fight between these two will likely happen but the question of November is a hard one to know. Is The UFC’S Heavyweight Division Lacking?
Affliction MMA has the top heavyweight division out of any promotion, without a doubt but it’s not hard to disagree with those people who think the UFC’s heavyweight division is completely lacking. Despite the fact that there’s a shortage of overall talent, there are still some high quality heavyweights that make the UFC their home. Opinion: Huerta Has More Issues With UFC.
Roger Huerta created some waves recently talking about his dissatisfaction with how the UFC has treated him, saying he doesn’t necessarily care if he keeps fighting for them or if it’s for someone else. What’s your take on that? How do you feel about the way the UFC treats its fighters? What’s With The Salaries For WEC 35?
WEC has shown with it’s last two cards, both of which were free to watch on Versus, that they have a very compelling, solid product, which again makes me wonder at the low payroll numbers. Don Frye, well known UFC and Pride Championships MMA fighter, will once again enter the ring, this time taking on Ikuhisa Minowa in the main event at Deep: Gladiators. The event takes place on August 16th at the Momotaro ARena in Okayama, Japan. Frye is very popular amongst Japanese fans, and he comes in having won three of his last four fights. AFL Looks To Become Major Female MMA Promotion.
The AFL must be thinking that there are quite a few promotions firmly entrenched in MMA on the male fighter side, and that there is a big oppotunity to capture the market on female MMA, and that seems fairly sound. If the AFL can market the fighters, and the fighters themselves are explosive and exciting, there’s no reason to think that a female league couldn’t survive. The AFL could end up being in a good position as the first major promotion to go for a large female roster, and that could help them survive the pitfalls of other major promotions who go head to head with the UFC.
