What are you willing to give up? And can I watch?

“What are you willing to give up for what you want and can I watch”? Is what was going on in my head while reading our boy Alan’s piece today on UFC102 Main Event of punching bag Randy Couture v. Nogueira. For those who didn’t see the fight It was three rounds of Couture getting his BUTT-KICKED. Alan asks the question:

“So can someone tell me why it is that we have to witness this all , as to the ego driven athlete who doesn’t know when to call time ?”

Interesting question Alan because I watched the same fight and it was not boring and not tough to watch. Instead, I loved watching Couture get his head kicked in and never give up. He refused to give in to numerous holds that most guys would have just  given-up. That fight was the most inspiring fight I’ve seen in a long time. If it were in a movie we would clap. Right? So why should we question it in real life?

How many times did we watch Rocky get clobbered by Apollo, Clubber, Big Russian dude, and others only to see Rocky defy all the odds and come back. Couture is tough as nails and if he wants the dough and the fame and can’t live without it then I’ll watch it and enjoy it. People make decisions for what they really want. Let ‘em sell out any way they want. “How badly do you want it”? Are you willing to die for it? Ask Flo Jo? “What are you willing to give up to get what matters to YOU”! Not others, but YOU! Let people live for themselves not others. They know the risks and are willing to take ‘em for the fame and the loot. Can you say “Usain Bolt”?

Too many steroids will kill you. No joke.

How can we call Ali the “greatest” and at the same time question why he continued to fight so late in his career? Isn’t this what the “greatest” does?  How he gets there? What he needs to continue to do when he arrives? And what he needs to do after? This is greatness. Couture proved he was a Baddass even at close to 50. And I’m sure he couldn’t live with himself by doing any less.

No one ever asks the single mother to quit one of her three jobs to spend more time with her kids. We just respect the hell out of her for making the choice to support her kids the best way she can at the expense of quality time with family. We all make these choices and by consequence are forced to live with them. Hopefully we choose wisely. But a few of us have no choice. We must be great at all costs.
