Remembering Jerry Kulwicki

He was on his way to the race at Bristol after a personal appearance. He was the reigning NASCAR Winston Cup champion - an improbable one since he owned and operated his own team. He beat great odds to win the title and was widely recognized and appreciated for it.

Half a field is better than no field at all

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Defending NASCAR Cup champ Jimmie Johnson visited the White House this week. Kevin Harvick, winner of last year’s Daytona 500, was hustled off to New York City to drum up interest. Both of which can only mean one thing – the 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season is upon us.

Adventures with Google

Here’s a surprise: the much-heralded former open-wheel stars, such as Juan Pablo Montoya (2.34 million hits) and Jacques Villenueve (2.23 million), who came from the most popular motorsports series in the world, Formula One, had roughly the same number of hits as Jeremy Mayfield (1.93 mi...

Watch and learn

Well, duh, you say. NASCAR has specific penalties, too, doesn’t it? Unfortunately, even when NASCAR announces very positive changes in its rules to promote safety, the sanctioning body still seems to prefer to leave itself some wiggle room.

Which 12 are the right 12?

Naturally, I included Hendrick Motorsports’ Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr. After looking hard at the numbers, with a special emphasis on last year’s car of tomorrow races, I left out Casey Mears. I’ll let him prove his ability before I go picking him to make the Chase.

Best Daytona 500? 1979.

ESPN Classic is televising six of the best Daytona 500 races of all time. Fans can log on to ESPN.com’s NASCAR page and choose their favorite Daytona 500 from the six. ESPN Classic will then show the top five races as chosen by the fans on Feb. 16.

Junior watch

It is quite amazing to watch the continuing debate about how well Dale Earnhardt Jr. will run next season. Is this a championship-making switch, this move to Hendrick Motorsports? Or will the addition of another top driver disrupt the balance of that team?

NASCAR has come a long way

As for television, NASCAR races were routinely presented as brief segments on ABC’s “Wide World of Sports,” sandwiched in between cliff diving and table tennis. It wasn’t until 1979 that a race, the Daytona 500, was broadcast from flag to flag live on network (CBS) television.

It’s better to give

Kyle Petty, Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Kasey Kahne, Dale Jarrett, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Bobby Labonte are among many of today’s drivers who are heavily involved in charitable campaigns. Included are the names of such inactive competitors as Ricky Craven, Morgan Shepherd and the late...

Will Toyota dominate?

And is this why so many longtime NASCAR fans hate the fact that Toyota is now racing in NASCAR? Is it because they are tired of seeing it dominate the American car market and fear the same thing will eventually happen in the “All-American” sport of NASCAR?

No Chase talk here

The reason I didn’t want to mention the Chase (There I go again. Three and counting.) is because I’m afraid that for the next 10 weeks, race fans are going to overdose on NASCAR’s 10-race playoff (That would be mention No. 4). Talk of, well, you know what, dominated most conversations Friday at N...

Wednesday night at the races

Speedway, the Milwaukee Mile, the road course in Salt Lake City and Rusty Wallace’s new track in Iowa, to name just a few possible host sites for a NASCAR Cup event (whether held on Sunday or Wednesday). Such races would help keep NASCAR in the spotlight throughout the week, whereas now, it d...
