“As some of you know I was in a almost 2 year relationship with UFC fighter Diego Sanchez, a man who proposed to me after 4 weeks of dating…Diego recently decided he can’t have both: he can’t have the relationship and be the champion. Sigh…and that’s ok…I am the kind of person I believe everything happens for a reason, due to God’s will and His plan for us…and I will do nothing but trust in Him and not who I thought and always imagined would always be there for me. Words sometimes have no meaning, based on the person they come from. Ladies, don’t rely on your “man” or whoever it is that you think will never forsake you. The only person who will never forsake you comes from a different perspective, a different being, the Lord Jesus Christ is who I am referri...

“I believe it’s important to show the nation all the positive work being accomplished here in Louisiana — to see the passion and commitment that comes from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office in this post-Katrina environment,” Seagal said of his decision to do the series. The MMA News found this little tidbit off the Reuters network: LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Steven Seagal is heading to the small screen, signing to star in a reality series for A&E that will chronicle his little-known life in law enforcement. Sokoudjou last entered the Octagon at UFC 89 where he lost to Luis Cane via TKO in the second round, and ends his current UFC run with a 1-2 record. Still Sokoudjou is young, and very marketable so look for him to be picked up by another organization. The MMA News will keep you up to date on any developments with Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou. The UFC continues to cut fighters, though it does seem to be hard to figure out what prerequisite’s are being used to determine which fighters are let go. High level Jiu-jitsu practitioner and now former UFC fighter Jorge Gurgel has been released from the UFC, even after receiving his second Fight Of the Night award in a loss at UFC 91, and has been immediately resigned by California based Strikeforce. Gurgel expressed some sadness at leaving the UFC but has also said that he is looking forward to the challenges offered by Strikeforce, who seem to be one of the few promotions besides the UFC that has survived and thrived with the recent MMA explosion. “I trained hard and really wanted to show the MMA fans a good show and let them know I was a 100% and ready to fight, I have the utmost respect for anyone who steps into the cage but felt disappointed that she just wouldn’t engage with me and turned her back on me. I was just dumbfounded.” Kim Couture must have been happy to win quickly over an over matched, and seemingly unprepared Lina Kvokov as part of the successful Strikeforce: Destruction fight card. Couture recently talked about the match via the XtremeCouture Blog, here’s the quote’s: “I felt very confident going into the fight, my footwork and boxing have greatly improved [...]

UFC 92: The Ultimate is going to be a big bang at the end of the year, and while there’s another UFC Fight Night first, one can’t help but water at the mouth looking at the big three lineup for 92. With the interim title on the line between Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Frank Mir, the light heavyweight title on the line with champion Forrest Griffin taking on Rashad Evans, and a rematch(rematch) between Quinton”Rampage”Jackson and Wanderlei Silva it’s going to be an amazing card. With a decent undercard this could easily be the best card of the year, and The MMA News expects tons of betting going on with these fights. Looking at the UFC betting odds you can see some interesting stat lines, including an even playing field between Silva and Jackson.

Also in the mix is Fedor Emelianenko’s manager, Vadim Finklestein, who had this to say about the Couture vs. Lesnar matchup: Overall the situation is quite complex, and add to it the near agreement between Affliction and UFC, and the way Dana White has been somewhat “nicer” when talking about Fedor Emelianenko and one has to think that there is something in the works to try to bring Fedor into the UFC octagon. Randy”The Natural” Couture is set to take on relative MMA newcomer Brock Lesnar, and UFC Dana White sounds like he’s hedging his bets. Here’s a quote taken from The Sun concerning the upcoming matchup: “It’s such an interesting fight because Couture is so good at coming up with plans for finding weaknesses in guys’ games [...]

The UFC 90 weigh ins are done, and Thaigo Alves came in at weight(many MMA fans were wondering about that one.) but Josh Burkman did not come in at weight and has one hour to shed the weight or give up part of his purse. “Let’s face it, the public’s perception of MMA is not exactly fantastic. Every time guys like Tank Abbot or Krazy Horse (Charles Bennett) fought or even now with Kimbo Slice; every time Kimbo fights it sets the sport back. Guys like that just reinforce the idea in the public’s eye that we are all blood thirsty barbarians who just want to pummel each other and that there is no skill required. Guys like them do the sport a disservice.” Kimbo Slice is set to return to the ring and face Ken Shamrock on October 4th, while you can catch Mir as a coach on TUF 8. Frank Mir recently talked about Kimbo Slice and how he’s affecting the perception of MMA in North America. Shaw has promoted both boxing and MMA but obviously had some success issues with EliteXC. Still he might have a point, though it’s hard to say without knowing the financials of the deal. In any case, expect Affliction and Golden Boy to work the co-boxing and MMA angle to try to get the mainstream and hardcore fans of both sports to view their product. Whether it works is anybody’s guess. Gary Shaw may be out of the front lines of EliteXC’s promotion game, but Shaw still has a voice heard by many MMA fans and insiders. With the recent developments between Golden Boy and Affliction, Shaw took time to talk to Steve Cofield about the partnership, and during the conversation he expressed some [...]
Matt Hughes recently took time on his blog to talk about the death and life of Evan Tanner. Here’s the quote: I didn’t really know Evan that well, we never spoke much; but news like this makes me wish that I had taken the time to get to know him a little better. He was 37 years old, only a couple of years older than me. Sometimes we think that we have all the time in the world to get to know people; but when someone who’s still pretty young passes away we realize just how fragile life is and how we can’t take those people around us for granted. Some people saw this coming based on the blog entries that he had posted before leaving for his trip, but it still comes as a shock to MMA fans and fighters all over the world.

4. Randy Couture (16-8-0) Couture is without question one of the greatest fighters to ever step foot into a cage or a ring; the man is a legend. He has victories over some the best fighters in the world when everything was stacked against him. 3. Josh Barnett (22-5-0) Barnett became the youngest UFC Heavyweight champion ever at the age of 24 years old. He was one the first true MMA fighters, that tried to learn it all; boxing, wrestling, and jiu jitsu. He then went to Japan because of the politic in the states. In Japan he won the Pancrase Grand Prix title, and became a PRIDE Fighting star. He did go on to beat some of the best talent in the division, including Aleksander Emelianenko, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, and Mark Hunt.

Shamrock’s been the Interim King of Pancrase champion, won the UFC light heavyweight title, then won the WEC light heavyweight title which he vacated to win the Strikeforce middleweight championship which he only recently lost to Cung Le. The MMA News recently had a talk with Shamrock and here’s what was said: Frank Shamrock: For the fans: Keep working out, keep training. For my opponents: Keep working out, keep training. The injuries forced Rua out of his UFC 85 bout with Chuck Liddell. “I’m back to training,” Rua said. “I’m doing some Muay Thai and jiu-jitsu stuff, and thank God everything is fine now.” Pride fans rejoice, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua looks like he will be returning to the ring in December where he will most likely be taking on Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, this according to Tatame.com. Rua has said that he has verbally agreed to fight the former light heavyweight champion Jackson, but there may still be some legal [...]
Hardcore MMA fans don’t always think of Kimbo Slice when one thinks of high-level mixed martial arts, but like him or not Slice is the “face” of EliteXC and the most watched MMA fighter(for a single fight) in MMA history. Q: Watching the Ultimate Fighter series definitely gives U.F.C fans an inside view of how childish many of the young fighters are. I call them punks. In your experience with the U.F.C., what percentage of the fighters still have this “punk” mentality? Q: Why do U.F.C. fighters seem to have better sportsmanship (i.e., hugging each other after a fight) while other televised fighters (W.W.E.) have little or no sportsmanship and turn the fight into a soap opera? A: Because U.F.C. fighters are really fighting and professional wrestlers are entertaining. After you fight somebody, in most cases there is a certain mutual respect.
The fight between these two will likely happen but the question of November is a hard one to know. UFC will market these two and the fight should garner good viewership, but with Noguiera returning in December, a GSP BJ Penn fight on the horizon and a Liddell-Evans battle upcoming there’s no real rush. Suspect the fight to occur, but it will require some luck for the fight to occur in November. There are tons of rumors circulating about a possible November bout between Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Wanderlei Silva and while most of the MMA world would love to see a third fight between the two(Wanderlei won the first two, one via TKO and the other via KO) it’s going to take some work for the [...]

Those people who follow MMA know who EliteXC rising star Brett”The Grim” Rogers is, but more mainstream viewers regard him as the man that got into Kimbo Slice’s face and called his performance “garbage.” With all the media attention, one can overlook the 8-0 record Rogers has amassed with 4 KO’s, 3 TKO’s and a submission due to strikes. The heavy-handed hitter recently had time to do an interview with The MMA News, here it is: Is your contract exclusive to EliteXC? How have you found the change of leadership at EliteXC with Gary Shaw and Doug Deluca? Have you been talked to death about the potential October fight with Kimbo Slice? The MMA New: Regardless of weight, which fighter are you most impressed with? How’s the ground game?
There are few MMA fighters that have fans as vocal as Houston Alexander’s and despite recent setbacks in the fight game, Alexander is ready to take his spot amongst the elite UFC light heavyweights. He next fights on September 17th at the Omaha Civic Auditorium in Omaha, Nebraska as part of the UFC Fight Night: Diaz vs. Neer and The MMA News recently had a chance to speak with him. Here’s what the highly entertaining fighter had to say: Houston Alexander: Man, I train everyday. It don’t matter, I’m always training. What did you think of the Anderson Silva vs. James Irvin Fight? What have you been doing outside of MMA? Do your kids understand MMA? Houston Alexander: They understand MMA, but actually there more into the WWE.
has been bringing you constant coverage of the “war of words” between Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic and Alistair Overeem. Most of the trash talk has been coming from Overeem, who went so far as to call Filipovic a “Douche Bag.”(To see The MMA News article on that click here. Now Filipovic has responded to that, and also let his fans know about his recent injury recovery via his own personal blog. Here’s what Cro Cop had to say: Filipovic took the highroad in not acknowledging Overeem’s words and only a fight in the ring between these two will solve the matter, though many MMA insiders feel that the match will in fact never take place. With the upcoming ShoXC event scheduled for August 15 at the Table Mountain Casino in Friant, Califorina just around the corner, The MMA News was lucky enough to have Cyrille Diabate give us a few moments of his time. Diabate(11-6-1) is scheduled to take on Jaime Fletcher(6-3-0) in what would be Diabate’s first MMA foray in North America and the 6′6″ international fighter is looking to come out strong. As with most MMA fighters, sponsorship is a big deal and Diabate was quick to thank Full Contact Fighter, RBP(Rolling Big Power), Lexani(Luxury Wheels), OTM(OTM Fight Shop) and Rockstar Energy Drink. As always the MMA News asked Diabate to give final comments, both for his fans and his opponent Fletcher.
AFL is looking to become a big player in MMA, and perhaps the fastest way to come anywhere near to the level of UFC is to do as the UFC does and offer pay-per-view events with a controlled payroll and solid marketing. As with any promotion the AFL’s success won’t be on it’s first show, but on how many fans they garner from the first show to help push the second pay-per-view. Of course UFC could run counter programming just as they did with Affliction, but unlike Affliction AFL’s roster is mostly not known to middle of the road mma watchers. In the end, AFL’s success in pay-per-view will be closely watched by all other MMA promotions, as it could show good or bad trends in the promotion game.
While Emelianenko doesn’t have the mainstream following of BJ Penn, or GSP, or even Kimbo Slice, he does have pure MMA skill and as the sport grows one can’t help but think that Fedor will become a major North American Star. The signing of Fedor is good for Fedor and equally good for Best, especially if he continues to destroy the competition like he has done during his career, and as he showcased at Affliction:Banned against Tim Sylvia. Some would say that in the world of MMA Fedor Emelianenko, the first ever WAMMA Heavyweight champion, is the best. Now he’s joined with BEST(Blue Entertainment Sports Television) as part of their Fight Sports/MMA division, and BEST will help Fedor with his marketing deals. Fedor joins several big name athlet...
Lesnar dominated his match against gate keeper Heath Herring but his after fight antics earned him little in the way of fan respect. Still the super-heavyweight is more than capable of having a solid fight against the strong striking Cheick Kongo. Kongo also won his undercard match, finishing near the end of round 1 to earn the TKO win. will bring you all the latest on rumors from UFC, and you can check out The MMA Forums by clicking here. The MMA News first thought that the idea of a fight between Cheick Kongo and Brock Lesnar would not only be a good matchup between two “moving up” heavyweights but that it would be a large gate draw as well.(click here for The MMA News article) Now Steve Cofield from Yahoo!Sports is reporting [...]
The Good: The Bad The Ugly Mike Goldberg mentioned that he wasn’t sure whether the judges would award more points for someone putting a submission on a fighter for for the fighter getting out of the submission. Wow, it’s obvious that the sub attempt will merit more points from the judges than the subsequent escape from said submission. Even Rogan quickly said “The submission attempt.” Opinion. As always The MMA News brings you the good, the bad, and the plain ugly for UFC, and UFC 87 had it’s fair share of all three. The Good: The UFC coverage of the fighters coming into the ring looked crisp, and the fighters seemed more interested in “entertaining” the fans as they entered the [...]

In the past there’s been some interest in RITC’s rules, mainly the allowing of knees on the ground to the face of an opponent. While RITC is sanctioned for this style of striking, most major MMA promotions don’t allow it. The MMA News will leave you with Day’s final comments regarding the use of knees to the head on the ground. Sometimes UFC fighter Jason “Dooms” Day recently took time out of his schedule to talk to The MMA News about both the fighter and Promotion side of MMA. Juggling a four fight contract with the UFC(he’s got two fights left), a solid mma promotion(Rumble In the Cage), and a full time job(house building) seems like [...]
“Basically I was always a fan of MMA, Martial Arts in general. When I got into it(MMA), it wasn’t acceptable to be in the sport. Now you have people who are coming in because it’s “shiny”, people like Affliction they won’t survive because they weren’t there when it started. I was down on my knees putting up the rings. “It’s not so much that the issues gone, but a lot of fighters want to call themselves professional athletes and then they don’t act like professional athletes. You sign a contract saying you can’t fight five weeks before the event and try and sneak one in. Drew Fickett is an awesome fighter, but he’s got issues.”
