To recap the day since this is the first report by The MMA News, UFC president Dana White posted the following messages from his Twitter site earlier today. Karo Parisyan has f****d over the UFC, the fans and his opponent again!!! He will not be fighting saturday or ever again in the UFC!! Throughout the day the big news has been the withdrawal of UFC welterweight Karo ‘The Heat’ Parisyan (18-5(1)) from his UFC 106 bout against Dustin Hazelett. The news was posted by UFC president Dana White, via his Twitter site, who said Parisyan will never fight in the UFC again. Speculation has run rampant all day [...]
MMA for the longest time seemed like the domain of the trash talking, hype selling superstar, but a new breed of fighter seems to be emerging, one based more on talent, and sold less on his or her words. Names like GSP, Anderson Silva, and Machida come to mind to name a few, a select group of fighters who rarely if ever bash their opponents and prefer to settle matters in the ring. Fedor Emelianenko is the flagship of that group in this aspect, not only choosing to never bash an opponent but rather giving them respect whenever possible. “MMA is not dogs fighting in a cage,” Emelianenko said. “This is a great sport. I like to meet my opponent and show that, first of all, I respect him as a sportsman.” Opinion.
Take it for what you will, but the Telegraph.co.uk had an interesting blurb concerning UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre and Dan Hardy(who is more than likely the number 1 contender). The Telegraph also understands that the UFC may be considering offering coaching places to the pair for the next series of The Ultimate Fighter. The irony in that is that Hardy has just bought a flat in his native town of Nottingham with his American girlfriend, who lives in LA and works in the fashion industry, planning to move to the UK. Hardy had spent the last few years living in LA, between returning for training camps.
With yet another controversial decision, this time coming from the victory awarded to Randy Couture over Brandon Vera, it’s time for the various athletic commissions and/or organizations to step up. It’s time for them to ensure that their judges are completely versed in Mixed Martial Arts and not just veteran Boxing judges who have only their own dated notions to go on. Otherwise, expect the same suspicious eye that’s turned towards boxing matches, and the subsequent cries of fixing to rise to a much higher level. Fresh off his stinging decision loss to UFC hall of famer Randy Couture, Brandon Vera recently talked to Sherdog about the bout’s final verdict. Here’s the quote: “I’m pissed, I’m really pissed, but the sport of MMA, she, MMA, is a b—h and if you let it go to the judges, you let it out of your hands, you know? So, I’m going to take the blame for this loss. I’m going to man up…I should have finished it. I had a couple of opportunities to during the fight that I should have finished it. I’m super happy I got to fight Randy Couture, my hero, my legend, and let the rest of the light heavyweight division know that I’m going to whip you’re a– if you get into the Octagon with me.”
The DREAM/Fighting Entertainment Group hybrid MMA/K-1 mixed fight event could benefit greatly by co-promoting with WVR to secure great ratings for their year end event. With the debut of heavyweight Satoshi Ishii’s canceled as part of the Sengoku show, the K-1 Premium Dynamite!! event could greatly benefit from Ishii’s presence on the card as fans await the debut of one of the most coveted free-agents in recent memory. In other related news, the expected bout between the “Super Hulk” tournament finalists, Ikuhisa “Minowaman” Minowa (43-30-8) and Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou (7-5), as well as a K-1 bout between Masato Kobayashi (54-6-2) and fellow two-time K-1 World MAX champion Andy Souwer (134-8) were announced for the December 31...

The solid ratings mean Strikeforce should return to the CBS airwaves in early 2010. Strikeforce and CBS executives were mum on future plans last week during pre-event festivities for “Fedor vs. Rogers.” “Those are decisions that will be made next week once we’ve had a chance … to look at the numbers,” Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). Saturday nights CBS broadcast of the “Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Rogers” event netted a viewer high of 5.46 million viewers during the main event bout between Fedor Emelianenko and Brett Rogers. The average number of viewers for the evening totaled 4.04 million which earned CBS a 2.5 household rating. The show scored top ratings in the adults [...]
Interestingly, Arlovski, who is coming off a pair of knockout losses this year to Fedor Emelianenko in January and Brett Rogers in June, could have fought on the Fedor vs. Rogers card this past weekend. Arlovski was offered Mike Whitehead, Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou (Whitehead and Sokoudjou would have moved up in weight) and finally Antonio Silva, but parties could not agree to the matchups. This December, former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski (15-7) will make his MMA return with Strikeforce or as part of the Sengoku or Dynamite!! 2009 on New Year’s Eve shows in Japan. FanHouse has learned that Arlovski’s management has been in discussions with the aforementioned organizations and Arlovski is currently training to potentia...
With the first collaboration between Strikeforce, M-1 Global, and CBS finished, one has to think that the respective companies are quite happy with the end results. Here’s our take on the night, in our usual column we call “The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.” Fedor continues to speak(through a translator mind you) with a humility that many other MMA fighters could learn for. Fedor deserves some respect just for his consummate professionalism, and his lack of trash talk. The five round fight between Jake Shields and Mayhem Miller, while a grappling exercise, was tedious and seemed at times to stall considerably. Despite the solid ground skills of both fighters, the hold downs by Shields seemed to drag on. Shields gained the victory, but certai...

One of mixed martial arts legends, Frank Shamrock (23-10-2), plans on competing for another eight years before he retires. Talking to FanHouse.com, the former UFC and WEC light-heavyweight champ, as well as former Strikeforce middleweight title holder, talked about his future prospects within the sport of MMA. “If they give the next middleweight title shot to me, it’s because I have a famous name,” Shamrock said. “It would be because it would bring in TV viewers, not because I’ve earned it.” Shamrock last fought on April 11 against Nick Diaz in a catch-weight fight of 179 pounds. Diaz won the bout via TKO in the second round of the Strikeforce show.
UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre has signed a multi-year endorsement deal with clothing apparel giant Under Armour. This marks the first MMA fighter to score a major endorsement deal with a top-selling brand. “Not only is Georges one of the biggest stars in one of the fastest growing sports in the world, but his dedication to training and making himself the best at what he does aligns perfectly with our brand’s mission to make all athletes better,” Under Armour Senior Vice President (Brand) Steve Battista stated. “When we found out that he was a fan of ours, we jumped on the opportunity to bring him into the Under Armour family.” Source: MMAjunkie.com
FanHouse: Most people consider Fedor the best heavyweight in the world and maybe the best MMA fighter ever. Is that what you think? Brett Rogers: I think he’s one of the best, looking at his record and his history he’s definitely great. But he’s facing a new, improved heavyweight: He hasn’t fought anyone like me. The way I see it, he hasn’t been tested the way I’m about to test him. This Saturday Brett “The Grimm” Rogers (10-0) will step into the cage against one of the best heavyweight fighters in the world, Fedor Emelianenko. Rogers told FanHouse.com that although Emelianenko has an impressive record “He hasn’t fought anyone like me.” FanHouse: Most people consider Fedor the best heavyweight in the world and maybe the best MMA [...]

Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida was awarded a unanimous decision victory over Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at UFC 104 Saturday night. He retains his light-heavyweight title despite the opinion of many fans and critics who felt the match should have been scored as a loss to the champion. “I think there will be a rematch,” White said. “I talked to both of them, and they both agreed to a rematch.” Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida was awarded a unanimous decision victory over Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at UFC 104 Saturday night. Antonio McKee: You got to remember that I’m also a very good coach. I’ve worked with “Rampage,” I work with some of the high-end profile fighters. They all know who I am. Unfortunately when you’re doing what I’m doing: I own a gym, I’m promoting “Knockout Promotions.” For a lot of local companies it doesn’t make sense for them to use me as their posterboy, as their star when they’re paying me peanuts and crumbs and I’m also a promoter doing shows. I understand the UFC. They don’t want competition six, seven years from now. Look at Golden Boy Promotions. Look at what they’re doing. Now [Oscar De La Hoya] is pretty much running boxing. And he’s a former boxer who decided he didn’t want to box no more and he wanted to make some real money and promote. So here I am ju...
No excuses,” says Appleton. “[War Machine] makes it sound like Roger having to pull out due to an injury is somehow a big loss for him. The reality is, I set up the fight for him on XFC, and even though Roger is out, he still got an opportunity and a payday out of it [at the September 5th event]. Now it’s time to settle this score between these two once and for all.” Press Release What started out as simply a potentially great fight has evolved into a blood feud between MMA Big Show Welterweight Champion “Relentless” Roger Bowling (6-0) and former UFC bad boy War Machine (10-2). After having to pull out of a fight against Machine twice due to injury, Bowling is being forced to defend himself [...]
Make no mistake the UFC treated me a lot better than Pride. If you get hurt in training in a UFC fight then will send you to the best doctors. If you get hurt in a Pride fight most of the time they will tell me “oh you better take care of that!” The UFC will always let you know in a timely matter who you will be fighting & give you enough time to train but with Pride if I knew 4 weeks ahead I would be happy cause most times they just give you a 2 weeks notice. Pride will rip you off on your merchandising but the UFC would find someway to hook you up on merchandising deals. Pride will make fights easier for certain fighters inside the ring (like standing up fights early). With the UFC whatever happens happens. The only thing I see the UFC needs to fix in this area is to...

“Let’s face it, the public’s perception of MMA is not exactly fantastic. Every time guys like Tank Abbot or Krazy Horse (Charles Bennett) fought or even now with Kimbo Slice; every time Kimbo fights it sets the sport back. Guys like that just reinforce the idea in the public’s eye that we are all blood thirsty barbarians who just want to pummel each other and that there is no skill required. Guys like them do the sport a disservice.” Kimbo Slice is set to return to the ring and face Ken Shamrock on October 4th, while you can catch Mir as a coach on TUF 8. Frank Mir recently talked about Kimbo Slice and how he’s affecting the perception of MMA in North America. Here’s the quote via FiveOuncesofPain.com “Let’s face it, the public’s perception of MMA is not e...
There are those MMA fans who find Mirko Cro Cop Filipovic to be aloof, or disrespectful to the sport, but that’s very far from the truth. Matt Hughes recently took time on his blog to talk about the death and life of Evan Tanner. Here’s the quote: I didn’t really know Evan that well, we never spoke much; but news like this makes me wish that I had taken the time to get to know him a little better. He was 37 years old, only a couple of years older than me. Sometimes we think that we have all the time in the world to get to know people; but when someone who’s still pretty young passes away we realize just how fragile life is and how we can’t take those people around us for granted. Some people saw this coming based on the blog entries that he had posted before leaving for his trip, but it still comes as a shock to MMA fans and fighters all over the world.

Q: Watching the Ultimate Fighter series definitely gives U.F.C fans an inside view of how childish many of the young fighters are. I call them punks. In your experience with the U.F.C., what percentage of the fighters still have this “punk” mentality? Q: Why do U.F.C. fighters seem to have better sportsmanship (i.e., hugging each other after a fight) while other televised fighters (W.W.E.) have little or no sportsmanship and turn the fight into a soap opera? A: Because U.F.C. fighters are really fighting and professional wrestlers are entertaining. After you fight somebody, in most cases there is a certain mutual respect.
The fight between these two will likely happen but the question of November is a hard one to know. UFC will market these two and the fight should garner good viewership, but with Noguiera returning in December, a GSP BJ Penn fight on the horizon and a Liddell-Evans battle upcoming there’s no real rush. Suspect the fight to occur, but it will require some luck for the fight to occur in November. There are tons of rumors circulating about a possible November bout between Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Wanderlei Silva and while most of the MMA world would love to see a third fight between the two(Wanderlei won the first two, one via TKO and the other via KO) it’s going to take some work for the [...]
