Dan Henderson defeats Rich Franklin at UFC 93 in Dublin, Ireland for the light heavy weight main event of the night. The win gets Henderson a spot on the Ultimate fighter as a coach for team USA. It also guarantees him a fight against Michael Bisping, who will be the coach for team U.K. This win is a huge win for the 38 year old Henderson who will be able to reach a new audience by being on network television further increase his fan base. The larger a fighters fan base, the greater his marketability with the organization he’s trying to climb the ranks with. Every true fighters goal is to acquire a title and this win has brought him closer to achieving that goal.
The win isn’t without controversy. Rich Franklin was visually upset with the decision and was justified for his reaction. Franklin showed a good offensive guard when the fight went to the ground, which is hard to implement against a two time Olympian who has an excellent base and is very hard to sweep. Franklin’s striking under Matt Hume’s coaching was apparent on the face of Henderson who was the recipient of chopping body kicks and well timed counter punching.
The co main event featured two fighters with a 17 year age difference between them. Mark Coleman made his ambitious return to the octagon after a decade of absence, fighting against Mauricio Rua. Coleman didn’t look comfortable with his stand up and after one round he appeared exhausted. Going into the second round Rua looked fresh and by the end of it, the fight was hard to watch as Coleman was barely standing, holding his hands dangerously low. Nearing the end of the third round Rua landed an uppercut that made the difference and brought the fight to a stop.
Also on the card was a middle weight bout against Rousimar Palhares and Jeremy Horn. Rousimar entered the fight full of emotion crying as he walked to the octagon. His emotions were incased in a body that looked like it was designed to implement a superior ground game. Horn showed good defense in the fight, but virtually no offense, Rousimar took the decision win and stated he did it with a broken hand he got in the first round.
