The PlayStation brand generated $331.6 million in sales in May while the year-to-date figure (January to May) stands at $2.27 billion in revenue. This is incidentally 46% higher than Microsoft and 17% more than last year. Breaking this down, hardware sales for PlayStation reached $133 million in May (98% higher than Microsoft) and software sales $159 million. Jack Tretton, president and CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment America commented “The dual platform release of the much anticipated Grand Theft Auto IV title reaffirmed its legacy on the PlayStation platform with a 6 percent higher attach rate than Xbox 360, reinforcing consumer choice of PS3.”

Sony has popped a heads-up on its PlayStation blog that we can expect a PS3 firmware update soon. Version 2.35 will be “released shortly” and will be a “relatively minor update to improve stability of some PS3 titles.” Nothing to get too excited about then but good to know. Sony also clarified that the update is not related to Grand Theft Auto IV. In response to a comment speculating that it was aimed towards GTA IV, Al de Leon responded “I just want to clarify that this upcoming firmware update isn’t related to GTA IV.” De Leon advised that a solution has been identified and PS3 owners who have issues with GTA IV should contact SCEA’s Consumer Services. Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto IV has topped the UK’s All Formats Chart for a second week. Despite experiencing a 77% drop in sales, GTA IV outsold Nintendo’s Wii Fit (at number 2) by 4 to 1 for the week ending the 10th of May. According to Chart Track, GTA IV has now past the one million sales mark in the UK. The Xbox 360 version of GTA IV accounted for 62% of sales this week in comparison to 55% last week, thus further widening its lead over the PS3 version.
